Railway Noise Reduction Campaign
Mr. D. Laws is one of several Cannock residents, living close to the railway track and suffering from the noise of heavy freight trains carrying coal to Rugeley power station from around 5-6 am and throughout the day. He has been in meetings with Railtrack, chaired by Tony Wright MP but says "Cannock Chase DC seem powerless to help us". He would like to hear from anyone in Gt Wyrley or Cheslyn Hay that has also been fighting Railtrack & EWS, the freight carriers. Please send email to david@davidstjohn.fsnet.co.uk

Safer Routes to School

[ From Joanne Wild, TravelWise Road Safety Co-ordinator, Development Services at Staffordshire County Council, joanne.wild@staffordshire.gov.uk ]

Last year parents and pupils of schools in the area were surveyed about their thoughts on safety in the area.  The results of the surveys were discussed by a steering group consisting of engineers, councillors, teachers, police, nurses etc.  Engineers will be designing a list of safety measures eg road humps, speed cushions, mini-roundabouts etc and pupils at school will be encouraged to study how to be safe near the roads.  A leaflet has been published to illustrate where the traffic calming features may take place.  All pupils and parents will receive a copy and there should be copies in the library, health centre etc. or you can download the following documents in PDF format (this may take some time, depending on the speed of your link): Introduction (929 KB), Safer routes to school  (1,784 KB)

Message from Phillip Nash in Thailand

"Dear all,

It is very pleasing to see a web site about the old village, it has brought a tear to my eye . I am sitting in the school
where I work and all the children are practising for the sports day, it does stir many memories - all good, I  must add.

It would be nice to hear from anyone I know in the village, however, I would be most grateful if someone could email
me any photos of the village or schools, or even send me brochures or postcards of any local attractions. I feel that my
students would be very grateful for the chance to see what life is like for kids from other cultures.

Keep up the Wyrley spirit and I wish you all the best of fortune.
Thanks...

Message from A. Russell

"I used to live in great wyrley during the 80's and went to Landywood primary school until
'88. I would be interested to know if any of my former teachers still taught at the school and about
the changes to the buildings there. I have very fond memories of the place and would be grateful of
any information you could give me.Yours sincerely Mr A.Russell" AdRusse@aol.com

Reunion - Great Wyrley High School sixth form 1989 - 1991

Andy Lyons writes:

"I would like to try and arrange either a gathering / reunion of former pupils of Great Wyrley High who attended the sixth form during the years of 89 - 91, before we lose touch completely. It's been ten years since we left and it would be nice to catch up with old friends. Many people I still see regularly but it would be nice to get everyone together, an ideal time maybe being Xmas 2001 when many of you will be in the area visiting relatives.
To help in this I'm looking for people who were in my year such as Si Jones, Paul Selvey, Annette Rider, Joanne Derry, Sarah Philips, Helen Dunning, Lisa Cooper, Andrea Lort to name but a few. Many people stayed on to take A Level exams in 1991 but there were quite a few who left in 1990 having stayed just for the first year. In the first instance please email me at andy.lyons@edwards.boc.com"

Susan (nee Freeman) Filippi used to live in Fair Oaks Drive, Landywood and attended Landywood Primary School. She emigrated to Australia in May 1973 at the age of 10.  She would like to hear from anyone who knows her and she is curious to find out how the area has changed.[ Susan's Email address is not currently working - we are waiting for her to make contact again ]

Alison (nee Nicklin) Voita sent an Email on 22 Aug 2000:
"I miss Great Wyrley! I desperately want to seek out old friends. I used to live in Great Wyrley and attended Great Wyrley High School from September 1986 to July 1990.  I emigrated to America in 1991 at age 17 .  I would love to hear from anyone that knows me." Email to alivoita262@cs.com

Dale Houlston made contact early in 2001:
" I was born in Cannock in 1968 and lived at 11 Kingswood Drive.  My mum and dad are Dot and Barry and my sister is
Kim. We moved to Skegness in 1978. I would like to make contact with anyone that thinks they knew me or any of my family when I was a little chap" " I remember Anthony Podmore; The Woods Family, Jonathan, Chris, Tim, Phil, Steve, Chrissie; The Parr family; Chris Smith's family; Phillip Johnson's family. Would like to here from anyone. We used to play all day down at the fields down at the bottom of Pool View in the old mining shacks. Hope to get an email  from someone soon."  dalehoulston@impactboston.ltd.uk
